Sloppy Joes
1 pound lean ground beef
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
1-2 fresh diced tomatoes
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
3/4 cup ketchup (or more, you will be able to tell)
1 teaspoon brown sugar
salt and pepper to taste
hamburger buns, for serving
1. In a medium skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, onion, and green pepper. This will start off dry, but eventually you will have liquid in there. Once it's done, drain off the liquid.
2. Stir in the garlic powder, ketchup, brown sugar, and tomatoes; mix thoroughly. Reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, and add more of whatever ingredient you feel there is too little of.
3. Toast hamburger buns. Serve buns and sloppy joe mix on the table. If your guests are Swedish or otherwise unused to Sloppy Joes, explain the putting of the meat onto the buns, and that they can be eaten with a knife and fork, if desired. :)
Note: This can easily sit longer before being served if necessary. My aunt's plane was delayed, so I kept it warm for quite some time without trouble.
Note 2: I suggest a salad on the side to balance things out.
